Backing Obamacare Requires the Willing Suspension of Common Sense

- Scott Miller

bohc-copy

I don’t know about you, but nothing pisses me off more than when politicians treat the American people like they are morons. Like we are so stupid we’ll just swallow their sophomoric logic, and shallow thinking lock-stock-and-barrel.

Obama’s plan to have government take over of the healthcare industry, and the Democratic talking points behind their propaganda plan is a perfect example of what I’m talking about. To follow their so-called “reform” plan, and take at face value the assertions they make, would require one to willfully suspend their common sense.

Take their main talking point for example, that one of the keys to the long term cost savings for the government will be the focus on preventative medicine to avoid long term costly health issues… here is Obama explaining the concept:

But unfortunately for Comrade Obama the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office just ruled that essentially Obama is full of crap, and really doesn’t know what the hell he is talking about. After all, his only life experience is being a community agitator. This from the Washinton Post:

Expanding Preventive Care May Add to Costs, CBO Says

In a letter to leaders of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, CBO director Douglas W. Elmendorf said the evidence suggests that the cost of making services such as cancer screening, cholesterol management, vaccinations and wellness training broadly available would far outweigh any savings ultimately generated.

“Although different types of preventive care have different effects on spending, the evidence suggests that, for most preventive services, expanded utilization leads to higher, not lower, medical spending overall,” Elmendorf wrote.

Opps… there goes that BS talking point. Those of us with common sense ignored this idea from the get go… we didn’t need the CBO director to tell us that massive new preventative care programs and bureaucracies would cost us a hell of alot more than it would saved in treatment. Somebody will still have to pay for all those doctors to tell fatso out there something he already knows…  to step away from the biscuits, and try a salad once in a while.

Another big talking point for Comrade Obama is that while there will be upfront costs of socializing out healthcare system (only another $1 TRILLION), the government can “bend the cost curve” and will save big money down the road. How this will work exactly… they never say… here’s a perfect example:

So there you have it… he says a socialized healthcare program, think medicare for all, will lower costs long term. But this completely ignores the history of costs for every single government entitlement program we have. Like any government entitlement program, waste, fraud, and abuse are prevalent, and the government bureaucrats who run these programs are largely incompetent and inefficient.

Unfortunately when one looks for examples of cost containment using similar programs like Obamacare, one finds the exact opposite happens… costs explode, they don’t go down. Take medicare for example, when medicare was created by the socialists in 1965 the government projected that medicare, in the year 2003, would cost taxpayers $26 billion a year; the actual cost came in at… get this… $245 billion, or 10 times what the politicians promised…. still want 535 central planners in Washington DC taking over your healthcare?

To take a more recent example of how wildy innaccurate (low) the government projections always are. The government Cash for Clunkers program… congress allocated $1 billion to the ’cash for clunker’ scheme.  Congress predicted that the $1 billion would last until November 1st, or 15 weeks from the launch of the program. Seeing that the program was bankrupt after week 1, Congress was therefore off base on their cost prediction by a factor of 15.

You see folks, the Democrats whole plan is for you to only hear what they are saying now, at the very time they speak… don’t question their assumptions, don’t bother to use history and common sense to project what the proposals will ultimately do to the healthcare system down the road… just focus on what we are telling you here and now damn it!
