Pelosi’s Pork Ladden Congress: A Culture of Deception
Filed Under Conservative Side of the Story, Statists (or Democrats for you Libs)
- Scott Miller
When the liberal Democrats won control of the House and Senate in 2006, Bug-eyes (aka Nancy Pelosi) promised the most ethical Congress ever. She stood before the American people and proclaimed that the days of earmarks (pork projects) were over. That the corrupt days of Republican rule were over, and she would run the House with full transparency so Americans would have faith again in their Congress.
One year later, and liberal Democrats are about as far from those predictions as they can possibly get. Under Bug-eyes leadership, the Democrats have gotten essentially nothing done. They have essentially wasted the taxpayer’s dollars all year long, attempting to hijack the role of Commander and Chief, while they tried their hardest to lose the war on terror.
The libs have been grossly derelict in their responsibility to pass 13 different funding bills to ensure the government continues to function in 2008, and they have held hostage desperately needed funding for our troops fighting al Qaeda overseas.
So it comes as no surprise, as the deadline for shutting down the government looms, that the do-nothing-but-harm Pelosi congress rammed through a massive 3,500 page omnibus funding bill that contains at least 8,000 earmarks… 8,000 earmarks that Pelosi, in all of her post election hubris, vowed would never come back. Put another way, Pelosi’s most ethical congress nearly quadrupled the wasteful spending earmarks over 2007. This from the great Senator from South Carolina Jim Demint:
DeMint Calls Mega Spending Bill “Unacceptable”
December 17th, 2007 – Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Jim DeMint (R-South Carolina) made the following statement today regarding the release of the proposed 3,565-page Fiscal Year 2008 Omnibus Appropriations bill.
“Republicans were expecting something the President could sign with a straight face but this bill is completely unacceptable,” said Senator DeMint. “We’ve only had it for a few hours and it’s clear this is a bad deal. Instead of passing a clean bill, Democrats have packed it full of controversial policy riders, wasteful earmarks, and budget gimmicks that add billions in additional domestic spending over the President’s level.”
“I’m sure Democrats will try to ram this down our throats before anyone can read it, but we should do everything we can to stop them. I know many in Congress are anxious to get home for the holidays but we have a responsibility to stop wasteful Washington spending and protect American taxpayers,” said Senator DeMint.
After an initial review of the legislation, several wasteful and unnecessary provisions have already been identified:
• Earmarks: Instead of reducing the number of pork projects in the federal budget, the bill drives the number of earmarks up from last year. The bill contains over 8,000 earmarks, bringing the total for 2008 up to over 10,000 earmarks compared to just 2,658 in 2007.
• Spending Gimmicks: Instead of cutting wasteful spending out of the bill to bring its cost down to the President’s level, the bill uses budget tricks and gimmicks to hide at least $14 billion in extra domestic spending.
• Policy Riders: Instead of limiting the package to spending needed to fund government operations, the bill includes unrelated policy items. Many of these riders are backed by special interests, such as organized labor, and could not win passage on their own.
Now, listening to the Mark Levin’s Show today on my drive home, apparently buried in this massive piece of (you know what) is a provision to give $10 million to lawyers of illegal aliens. Why the hell would we be spending one red cent of the taxpayer’s money on lawyers for people who should not even be here in the first place. Have these people lost theirs minds?! Since Congress passed this piece of crap after only giving members only 24hrs to read all 3500 pages… no one even knew what was in this thing that they voted for!
Will Bush and the conservatives in the Senate stand up to finally say enough is a freakin’ ‘nough with the out of control spending. The government is nothing short of a PIG. We have almost a $3 TRILLION federal budget. $3 TRILLION!! That is insane, and somebody has got to stop this.
Unfortunately, the fix may be in the Senate to allow this spending to slide through. This from Robert Novak on Real Clear Politics:
As the minority party in Congress, the GOP will have less than 24 hours to read the massive bill before it comes up for a House vote on Tuesday. While at least coming close to the Bush limit, the bill will be passed over Republican opposition because it contains no Iraq war funding. It then will go the Senate on Wednesday, where Republicans will use their filibuster threat to insert money for Iraq. Overall spending will be reduced to the Bush standard in the Senate by means of an across-the-board cut.
The bill then will be passed into law by the House, though Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she personally will vote against this solution that, in effect, finances the war at the expense of domestic programs
But the overriding reason for backing away from a showdown on government spending was the feeling in both parties that elected representatives cannot return home without booty, financed by the bank accounts of American taxpayers. However, House Minority Whip Roy Blunt, not known previously as a foe of earmarks, has come to the conclusion that his colleagues vastly overrate the political necessity of pork.
Rep. Blunt and Sen. DeMint met privately Friday to probe ways of enacting a clean, pork-less bill. They have not given up, but the odds against them are heavy, as their colleagues yearn to return home for Christmas. Each is a Santa Claus distributing earmarks to special interests with no thought of reform.
You know, it’s about time Americans start getting directly involved in this fight to scale back this massive PIG of a government. Call your Senator, send them emails, tell them to end this taxpayer fleecing through the abuse of earmarks. Tell them to get their damn priorities straight, and try cutting the taxpayers a break for once. How about actually cutting spending for once… and I don’t mean restraining the rate of growth, I mean actual cuts!
